Monthly events feature regional, and national region-born writers, sharing their newest work
The Dunes Literary Series, hosted by the Department of English at Indiana University Northwest resumes this fall with writers from a range of genres and backgrounds. The monthly reading series will feature Great Lakes writers from Northwest Indiana, Chicago, and Wisconsin.August 25: Jackie White and Ana Osan
The series' first translation night will feature Jackie White and IUN's own Ana Osan, both reading from their translations of works originally written in Spanish.
"We will have two amazing Spanish translators sharing their work and discussing the art of translation," said Dunes Literary Series co-curator and IUN Professor of English William Allegrezza. He hopes to make translation a regular part of the series.
September 22: Nick Demske and Chris Glomski
Nick Demske, from Racine, Wisconsin, is one of the great readers in poetry to hear live. His self-titled book was selected for the Fence Modern Poets Series. Serving as a locally elected official, Demske also works on children's literacy and racial reconciliation in Racine.
Glomski, whose work particularly engages the poet James Schuyler, is a writer of uncommon beauty. Labeled by a recent critic as a "flaneur in an online epoch," Glomski is also a translator of Italian poetry. His most recent book is “Lit Up.”
October 27: Tariq Shah and Ed Roberson
The October event pairs a poet and a novelist. Originally from the Chicago suburbs and now residing in Brooklyn, Tariq Shah will read from his brilliant novel, “Whiteout Conditions.” Living within a string of losses, the novel's main character has returned to Chicago for a friend's funeral. As he travels a wintry I-294 north into Wisconsin, he comes face to face with these recent and even more ancient griefs.
The unparalleled Chicago poet Ed Roberson, winner of numerous awards, including the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize in 2016, will join Shah. Roberson is the author of two books in 2021 alone, “Asked What Has Changed” and “MPH + Other Motorcycle Poems.” The latter recounts a cross-country journey that Roberson made with friends decades ago. With great play and insight from his bike, Roberson explores "the road" that runs through the country. A space as Roberson puts it, "the road's sides that leave the there ahead / as an empty spot."
Dunes Literary Series readings take place every fourth Wednesday of the month at 6:30 p.m. All readings are free and streamed via Zoom.
