Publication celebrates return with a special double issue and community events
Spirits, Indiana University Northwest’s bi-annual art and literature magazine featuring pieces by IU Northwest students, as well as local, national, and international talent, will celebrate the release of its latest double issue with a reading from contributors on Tuesday, October 19, at 4 p.m. The reading will take place in the Gallery for Contemporary Art in the Savannah Center.
Delayed by the challenges of campus life during COVID-19, the double issue features a short story by IU Northwest alumna Lindsey Stewart titled "Perspectives," as well as poems by fellow alumni, Marc DeLao, Alaina Polen, Darnel Stitt, Caleb Thompson, S. VerWey, and other writers from across the region. It was edited by IU Northwest alumni Jason Becker, Rachel Calderone, and Annabella Melvin.
Spirits Editor-in-Chief, student Lauren Frick, is excited for the newest issue. She says, “It’s been a long time coming and is the product of the labor of a lot of people. I’m glad it’s finally out in the world so others can see the work of our talented writers and artists.”
A release party and second reading will take place on Friday, November 12, at 5 p.m., at the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana.
Spirits invites writers from across the region to submit work for its upcoming spring 2022 issue. The journal welcomes fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and visual art. Writers can get more information by emailing Editor Lauren Frick at spirits@iun.edu or through reviewing the journal's webpage.
