Fine Arts

Welcome to the IU Northwest Department of Fine Arts

Description of the video:

What a wonderful advantage we have is that
we are so close to Chicago, that we have
this world-class collection of galleries
and institutions that are really right
here and available for our students, and
they're able to become part of the
extended community of the Chicago art
world, which is rare opportunity for
somebody studying arts in at a state
school, but in addition to that most of
our faculty in our department are active,
nationally known professional artists.
I think making those personal
relationships, you know, with
students, and making those professional
relationships with professors, and
developing those bonds kind of overall
helps you in your professional career.
I think that in the region were the only
campus that offers both this range of
degrees, but also the depth and a
variety of faculty that we have to offer them

The IU Northwest Department of Fine Arts offers a first-class baccalaureate degree program that serves the northwest region of Indiana as well as the Chicagoland area. The department is comprised of a community of remarkable professional artists and educators who are nationally and internationally active in their disciplines, and who are fully committed to the educational advancement of their students. As a student-centered community, we embrace the diverse vision of our students and faculty in the creative inquiry, production, and exploration of a wide range of studio arts and practices.

With baccalaureate programs focused on painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphic design, ceramics, and printmaking, IU Northwest introduces students to historical art making materials and process in addition to encouraging them to freely experiment across mediums. Our campus also offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in art education and a Bachelor of Science degree option in graphic design in collaboration with the department of Computer Information Systems.

Program Highlights

IUN is located on a graceful manicured campus just off of I 80/94 in Gary, Indiana - approximately thirty-five minutes by car from downtown Chicago. This gives our students and faculty easy access to one of the country's great art centers in addition to world-class museums. This close proximity to Chicago manifests itself in many ways throughout our program. From the class trips to Chicago museums to the faculty we attract to our campus, IUN benefits from being close to Chicago, while keeping the openness and ease of a freestanding campus.

The faculty at IU Northwest are an impressive group of artists and scholars actively engaged in their creative work and renowned in their fields. Faculty accomplishments include high level public commissions and acquisitions to the permanent collections of some of the most prestigious museums, such as: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, The Museum of Contemporary Photography and many others. Our faculty have exhibited widely across the US and in Europe and Asia in addition to being active members of the Chicago arts community.

In addition to being accomplished artists, IUN’s faculty are committed teachers with a long history of working closely with students, helping them to grow their general knowledge, studio work, and individual visions. Students work directly with their individual instructors, exploring new concepts and techniques in an energetic and collaborative environment. As a student-centered institution, IU Northwest is committed to putting students first.

Career Opportunities

Students completing the Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art will be prepared to consider careers in a variety of fields connected to the arts, such as positions in museums and galleries, curatorial, research, art history, critical writing, positions in the corporate world which require creative sensibilities, and art education, as well as becoming professional visual artists and designers. The study of studio art is not primarily about mastering techniques, but is about thinking, evaluating, analyzing, and creating unique and personal solutions. The Studio Art program is also excellent preparation for post-graduate study in the visual arts.
