Arts Encounters

Thinking and working creatively extends beyond the classroom at Indiana University Northwest.

In addition to our two campus galleries, visual and performing art encounters can be experienced in traditional and non-traditional settings both indoors and outdoors. Our campus community can take advantage of an extensive collection of artworks and objects, and special archives by working closely with partners across the Indiana University campus network. IU Northwest is often the recipient of artworks and objects by known and anonymous donors and celebrated multidisciplinary artists' generously gifting works of art for public viewing across our campus.

Our state-of-the-art performance venues have been established as cultural centers in the Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland region. Today, our theatres serve as a cultural, academic, and civic hub committed to providing diverse opportunities and programming related to cultural exposure, community engagement, and experiential learning.

They have been accumulated, in some cases, for centuries, and can contain unique and irreplaceable material of enormous value. Though not always thought of in these terms, they can be among an institution's most valuable resources.”

Indiana University has collections that can be found across multiple campuses and multiple venues, such as galleries, museums, centers, and libraries. Additionally, there are collections located within academic and administrative units on each campus. While the list is quite large, you can find various people, projects, and collections spotlighted for your interest and enjoyment at www.collections.iu.edu.

Campus Collection at IU Northwest

Many artworks complement the buildings and grounds at IU Northwest, including several renowned artists including David Klamen, Vera Klement, Ed Paschke, Pablo Picasso, Neil Goodman, Victor Vasarely, Francis Whitehead, and Robert Motherwell. You will also find several artworks by student alumni - Cathy Feeman, Katherine VanDrie, Keith VanWinkle, Jeremy Boyer, Jennifer Maguire, Padraig Johnston, Blanca Lopez, Randi Wible, Amy Miller Hill, and others.

Chancellor Emeritus Bruce W. Bergland's tenure from 1999-2010 initiated a visual transformation and an intensified academic focus on the fine and performing arts at IU Northwest, making the campus a center of artistic and cultural expression in Northwest Indiana. The Shadows and Echoes Sculpture Garden represents the centerpiece of Dr. Bergland's beautification program.

Sculptor and Fine Arts Professor Emeritus Neil Goodman, in collaboration with landscape architect Cynthia Owen-Bergland, developed the ambitious sculpture garden in one of the most visible public spaces on the campus -- the courtyard of the Savannah Center. Bounded by glass walls, the garden displays a series of Goodman's monumental bronze sculptures and extends to the grassy knoll adjacent to the north end of Hawthorn Hall. "This garden is an important milestone in my career and one of my most beloved and ambitious Projects," said Goodman. "It is also one that I hope will encourage new generations of Fine Arts faculty to leave their imprint on the campus and create their legacies." "The garden is an integral part of the whole project," Owen-Bergland explained. "The garden represents the ecological heritage of Northwest Indiana. Tall grasses six feet high in planters reflect the region's place on the tallgrass prairie's eastern edge. A fountain with boulders refers to the retreat of a glacier to Lake Michigan, which left boulders in its wake. This backdrop representing the native prairie will complement the industrial vision of the sculptures."

Chancellor Emeritus Bergland recast the image of Indiana University Northwest as an aesthetically vibrant and culturally relevant center for higher learning in Northwest Indiana. Through his belief in the power of art to transform an institution's visual and academic character, Dr. Bergland led the campus into the most successful era of its history and helped create an enduring legacy of cultural discovery and artistic expression.
