Writing Center

The Writing Center at IU Northwest is a free service that provides students with one-on-one tutoring for any writing assignment in any course. It is located in Hawthorn Hall 418.

The consultants at the Writing Center have experience in a variety of disciplines, and they are able to assist students with all facets of the writing process, including:

  • Generating and expanding on ideas.
  • Organizing information so that it is logical and easy to understand.
  • Creating well-developed paragraphs that support the essay’s central point.
  • Writing sentences that are both interesting and structurally sound.
  • Editing for grammar and mechanics.
  • Assisting in integration and documentation of source materials.

Students are required to bring their paper and assignment prompt to their tutoring session, which will last thirty minutes.  If a student is having difficulty brainstorming, we are able to assist them in starting the paper, but we require that students looking to brainstorm have already contemplated how to begin their paper in depth.  Brainstorming sessions will not count for a class-required Writing Center visit.

If coming to the Writing Center is a requirement for one of your classes, prepare for your session by identifying at least three areas of your paper that you need specific work on (your thesis isn’t contestable; your conclusion is weak; your evidence is minimal; your analysis is lacking; your transitions are stiff; your paragraphs aren’t focused, etc.).  Be on time.  In order for us to email your professor about your session, you must be present for a full thirty-minute session.  If you are late or have to leave early, the appointment will not count for your requirement, and you may have to reschedule.

We do accept walk-ins; however, making an appointment by calling 219-980-6502 or by emailing iunwc@iun.edu will ensure that a consultant will be available to work with you when you arrive.  Please schedule appointments at least two days in advance.  During the busiest weeks of the semester--the three weeks around midterms and the three weeks before finals--we encourage students to schedule appointments a week in advance because we get extremely busy and might have to turn you away if you wait until the last minute, even if it is a requirement for a class.

If you are unable to make it to campus on a given day, we also offer online tutoring sessions.  Also, we offer a program, Semester Tutoring Match, to match students with a tutor for a semester.

Tutors are also available to perform classroom visits to explain the Writing Center’s services to classes, which is especially encouraged if a faculty member is planning on requiring their students to make a visit at the Writing Center sometime during the semester.  To arrange a visit, faculty can contact the Writing Center by calling 219-980-6502 or by emailing iunwc@iun.edu.
